Elliott: A Soldier's Fugue
A NEW PLAY BY QUIARA ALEGRÍA HUDES
DIRECTED BY DAVIS McCALLUM
Produced by Page 73 Productions and directed by Davis McCallum, Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue by Quiara Alegría Hudes was presented from January 28 – February 19 at 45 Below @ The Culture Project. The New York Times called Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue “A theatre work that succeeds on every level”, while Time Out New York called it “poignant, moving and utterly realistic.”
As Elliot Ortiz grapples with his recent return from active duty in Iraq, the military experiences of his father and grandfather unfold, uniting the Ortiz men across time. As Elliot’s tale moves back in time, the stories of his father, mother and grandfather move forward until past and present inevitably collide, wringing love and beauty from devastation. Melding poetic dreamscape with stream-of-consciousness narrative, Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue explores unspoken connections between individuals, across time and generations.
The production featured Mateo Gómez (Theater: Eyes for Consuela - MTC, Santa Conception; Film: The Other Shoe, Music of the Heart), Zabryna Guevara (Eduardo Machado’s The Cook – INTAR, Sonja Flew - Huntington Theatre), Armando Riesco (Film: Fever Pitch, National Treasure, Garden State, World Trade Center), and Triney Sandoval (The Idiot – Manhattan Ensemble Theatre, Whisper - INTAR), with set by Sandra Goldmark, costumes by Chloe Chapin, lighting by Joel Moritz, music by Michael Friedman and sound design by Walter Trarbach & Gabe Woods.
In the fall of 2006, Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue will be presented as part of the IMPACT Festival, in a co-production between Page 73 Productions and El Museo del Barrio. This fall, Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue will also be produced by the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. Additional regional productions are currently being organized.
