Tribute to Peacekeeping

Musical artists from around the world will unite to pay tribute to UN peacekeepers who serve some of the most victimized populations in the most dangerous places on earth. Using music as a powerful instrument of peace, artists will commemorate the 64th anniversary of the United Nations.

The anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Charter on 24 October 1945 has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. It was first observed by President Harry Truman, and each year since, the President of the United States has issued a formal Proclamation asking all Americans to observe UN Day. UN Day is a day of global observance to reflect on the work, role and achievements of the UN and its family of specialized agencies. 24 October 2009 marks the 64th Anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.

United Nations Day Concert: Tribute to Peacekeeping is being produced with the intention of spurring a dialogue in the international community, which will recognize the obstacles and struggles pertaining to peacekeeping operations, as well as their importance in promoting peace and security around the globe.

Actor and filmmaker Fisher Stevens, producer of this year’s multi-award-winning documentary The Cove, is directing a film on UN Peacekeeping, The War Against War, which highlights the historic creation of the UN Peacekeeping forces and the challenges of fighting “the war against war.” Stevens’ film will give the audience one-of-a-kind access and insight into the formidable challenges facing peacekeepers that risk their lives on a daily basis to protect civilians and provide breathing space for a fragile peace to take hold.
