Women Songwriters in Global Solidarity
A new initiative gathering women musicians who are activists in their communities all around the world, EMANCIPATE presents a series of music evenings celebrating these women artists.
Tuesday July, 10 at 7:30 PM
An evening of music, spoken word and film to launch Myth of the Motherland, a film that asks what you get when you take 10 young artists and a film crew to twelve African nations in three months. Featuring Queen God-Is and Mahina Movement.
BUT BEFORE THE SHOW - 9:30 AM - Free Breakfast Panel Discussion at McNally Robinson Bookstore. Mia Herndon, program officer at the Third Wave Foundation, moderates a discussion between musician Queen GodIs, filmmaker Lisa Russell of Myth of the Motherland, spoken word artists from Urban Word NYC, Dayanara Marte, and other activists from Casa Atabex Ache. We will discuss the work of young women leaders in the arts and in organizing and explore the intersections of their work.

BUT BEFORE THE SHOW - 9:30 AM - Free Breakfast Panel Discussion at McNally Robinson Bookstore. Sally Kohn, in partnership with the North Star Fund, moderates a discussion between musicians Chantal Kreviazuk, Marta Gomez, and Imani Uzuri and organizers and members of Make the Road By Walking. We will look at the use of art and activism in the service of community change.

You can take the 1 or 9 train to Franklin Street, walk one block south to Leonard, turn left and walk a block & a half to the club.
You can take the A, C, or E train to Canal Street, walk 4 blocks south and turn left on Leonard. You could also take the N or R train to Canal Street, walk down Broadway 4 blocks to Leonard, turn right, and see the club at the far end of the block. Eisa Davis moderates a discussion between musicians Pamela Means, Alix Olson, and Taina Asili and Adrianne Shropshire, Executive Director of New York Jobs with Justice. We explore the intersections of art and activism, what has worked, what the challenges are, and how artists and grassroots activists can continue to effectively work in partnership.

Community organizer Malia Lazu moderates a discussion between musicians Cris Williamson, Vicki Randle, Christina Courtin, and Sandra dos Santos and activists Janice Dixon, Kyung Ji Rhee, and Diana McClure. We look at the presence of art in activism across generations, current work engaging art and activism together, and ideas for imaginative action going forward.
