Cartas: Love Letters from a Portuguese Nun

Translated and Performed by Myriam Cyr Featuring the Voice of Liev Schreiber

Directed by Lisa Forrell

The Passion of Marianne is the story of a young woman wronged in love by a faithless man. The story is perennial, but the perspective is unique—this is the true story of a young nun in 17th century Portugal, Marianna Alcoforado, who was seduced and then abandoned by a young French cavalry officer, Count Chamilly, inspiring a stream of letters that became one of Europe’s great literary masterpieces. The correspondence plots a journey of love from radiant innocence, through anger, blighted hope and despair, and emerging finally, without regret, into serenity and wisdom.
